Mission Statement
Mission & Goals
Established
in 1953 by parents wanting to create opportunities for their children with
mental
retardation and developmental disabilities, The Arc opens doors and unlocks
potential for consumers of all ages. Providing advocacy and access to
educational, vocational, recreational and critical life skills programs, The Arc
is an essential resource for consumers, their families and the community.
Mission
The Arc of Dauphin and Lebanon Counties is a non-profit, membership
organization with a primary purpose of providing services and supports, with
dignity and respect, to persons of all ages with mental retardation. To achieve
this purpose, The Arc will cooperate with other government and private agencies
and organizations such as the mental retardation system, education system,
religious community and other community organizations that provide services to
persons with disabilities, especially mental retardation. Services to be
provided include advocacy emphasizing individual rights, education, public
awareness, resource and referral.
Goals
The Arc recognizes and upholds the right of all people with mental
retardation to enjoy a quality of life that promotes independence,
self-determination, and participation as productive members of society. This
basic right shall be obtained through supports and services provided through the
implementation of the Advocacy, Education and Awareness Program:
- Assurance of full citizenship rights for individuals (Advocacy)
- Provision of necessary supports to individuals and families (Advocacy and
Education)
- Reduction of the occurrence and severity of mental retardation (Education
and Awareness)
- Promotion of public awareness through dissemination of information on
issues, programs and services within the field of mental retardation
